Role/Assignment: Finance Director
The Client
A rapidly growing biotech company based in London was preparing for its next phase of scale, following successful early-stage growth and increasing investor interest. The business required a Finance Director who could operate strategically while remaining hands-on in a fast-moving startup environment.
The role was critical: The successful candidate would help professionalise financial operations, support investor engagement, and play a key role in preparing and securing future Series funding.
The Challenge
The client needed a very specific blend of skills and mindset:
- Proven experience within startup and scale-up environments
- Strong track record supporting or leading Series funding rounds
- Ability to build financial infrastructure while remaining operationally hands-on
- Commercial mindset to partner closely with founders and investors
- Cultural alignment with a fast-paced, entrepreneurial team
This was not a traditional Finance Director hire. The candidate needed both strategic credibility and startup agility.
Our Approach
Bond Williams took a consultative approach to fully understand the client’s growth plans, funding roadmap, leadership style, and operational challenges. Rather than simply matching CVs to a job description, the focus was on identifying what success in the role would truly look like 12–24 months post-hire.
This allowed Bond Williams to target candidates who demonstrated:
- Direct experience navigating the complexities of venture-backed growth
- Hands-on leadership in building financial controls, forecasting, and reporting
- Strong investor communication and fundraising exposure
- The resilience and adaptability required in a scaling biotech environment
Extensive screening ensured both technical competence and cultural alignment.
The Result
Bond Williams successfully placed a Finance Director who brought:
- Prior startup leadership experience
- A strong track record of supporting and securing Series funding
- Immediate operational impact across finance strategy, governance, and growth planning
- A collaborative leadership style aligned with the founding team
The client gained a trusted financial leader capable of supporting both immediate operational demands and long-term strategic growth.
Client Impact
- Accelerated readiness for future funding rounds
- Strengthened financial governance and reporting
- Increased confidence from investors and stakeholders
- Long-term leadership stability during scale-up phase
