Materials Scientist – Microfluidics – West London

A brand new vacancy for a Materials Scientist with an incredible biotech start-up has become available, based at state of the art labs in West London (W12). The Materials Scientist will select and optimise materials used in microfluidic cartridge devices and help develop scalable processes for the assembly of such devices cross-functionally with internal and external engineers.
Key responsibilities:
- Drive material innovation by evaluating and testing cartridge materials and components, balancing cost-effectiveness with critical technical specifications such as thermal expansion properties
- Pioneer manufacturing excellence through research and development of robust, high-quality materials and efficient assembly processes that maximize production yield
- Lead quality assurance initiatives by establishing comprehensive criteria, statistical methodologies, and analytical frameworks to detect non-conforming materials and identify product defects
- Champion sustainability and efficiency by creating innovative approaches to rework and recycle components that don’t meet initial quality standards
- Transform data into actionable insights by analysing results, documenting discoveries, and producing detailed technical reports with clear metrics and improvement recommendations
- Shape organizational standards by actively contributing to the development and ongoing enhancement of our quality management system
- Contribute to intellectual property by supporting the creation of patents and scientific publications that advance industry knowledge
Qualification required:
- D. or Master’s degree in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or related discipline.
- Familiarity with materials integration into devices and system-level thinking.
- Knowledge of microfabrication, microfluidics, or device assembly and packaging.
- Good commercial awareness with strong focus on device performance and cost.
- Familiarity with analytical tools and methods used to assess and compare different materials and for the quality control of components.
- Strong problem-solving abilities and attention to detail.
- Excellent teamwork and communication skills.
