Division: Accounting & Finance
Role/Assignment: Financial Controller
The Challenge
The client’s Financial Controller left the business after 15 years, creating an immediate gap within the finance function.
Initially, the company relied on its external accountants for support. However, this was becoming expensive, so the business attempted to recruit directly at an hourly rate of £18 per hour.
After two rounds of advertising and interviews, no appointment had been made.
Three months had passed without dedicated finance cover. During this period, the Director had taken on some of the responsibilities despite not having an accountancy background, while employees were becoming unsettled by the continued lack of finance support.
The business needed someone who could start quickly, understand its systems, assess its financial position and manage the day-to-day finance function.
Our Approach
The Director contacted Bond Williams to discuss the difficulties they had experienced.
We reviewed the urgency of the requirement, the systems knowledge needed and the level of experience required.
We advised that the original £18 per hour rate would need to increase if the company wanted someone sufficiently experienced to take ownership of the finance function quickly.
Rather than continuing with further unsuccessful advertising, we focused our search on experienced candidates who could meet the requirements and start at short notice.
The Outcome
A suitable candidate was identified immediately.
The candidate was interviewed the following day, offered the role at the meeting and started the following week.
The appointment was made at the enhanced hourly rate Bond Williams had advised.
The Result
✔ Appointment made after three months without successful cover
✔ Candidate interviewed the following day
✔ Offer made at interview
✔ Candidate started the following week
✔ Client adjusted the hourly rate following our market advice
✔ Dedicated finance management restored quickly
